Is it possible to consider St Joseph as an example of apostolical life ? Let us be frank : he seems to be quite the opposite of the apostles. They did announce the Gospel at the right or the wrong moment, they did announce Jesus to all the nations on earth, setting Him out in full light. Joseph, on the contrary, never speaks, hiding Jesus and burying himself with Him into Egypt’s night.
But does apostolical life consist in speaking about Jesus or in making Him known ? Saint Joseph’s life is a mystery of self-denial that leaves all the room to Jesus. It is upon this spiritual attitude that all apostolical life is founded. What comes first and foremost is the way to interiority; Saint Joseph’s silence is best perceived within the apostle’s testimony: « I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. » (Ga 2,20).
